Wow, I was not expecting to enjoy this like I did! After reading the reviews here (and hearing the “messed up” [according to one of my friends who had seen this] plotline), I thought it would just be an average Studio Ghibli movie (like From Up On Poppy Hill and Pom Poko), not really something that blew me away or anything. And although it isn’t a complete masterpiece like Ghibli classics such as Howl’s Moving Castle (my personal favorite), Castle in the Sky, and Spirited Away, it was a very intriguing, beautiful story that drew my interest from the very beginning and held it captive. I was caught up in the story and the conflicts that the characters faced, especially Arren. I seriously fell in love with Arren’s personality and character. He was complex, deep, mysterious, and you can’t help but love and fear for him. The supporting characters (Sparrowhawk, Therru, Tenar, and Lord Cob) were extremely good. They were unique, interesting, and all interacted with each other in a different way. Also, this movie makes me VERY interested in the books series, which I have not read. Because I’m sure the movie left out TONS of details (if the previous reviews here are any evidence), I’m sure I’d love the books even more. At any rate, a beautiful film that deserves more attention. And to those not happy with it because it isn’t accurate according to the books, I really do understand where you’re coming from. I mean, that’s basically my opinion on the recent Hobbit films (you can check out my reviews on those if you want). But, really, my view is you can spend all your time pointing out all the flaws in the movie and how much it was different from the original (and BELIEVE ME, I do this), or you can just stick around and enjoy the new ride. I plan to go read this series now, and I may change my opinion slightly on this movie when I’m done. But for now, I will say I really enjoyed it. Oh, also, the way the movie dealt with the themes of life and death was gorgeous. Ghibli has not let me down and surprised me once again.
