The oddly named "Daughters Unto Devils" may remind some people of "Little House of Horrors On The Prairie", but to me, it was more like a combination of H.P. Lovecraft "The Color Out Of Space" and "The Exorcist". Our sixteen old heroine Amanda has just been abandoned by her boyfriend Henry when she tells him she's pregnant. Her sister/best friend Amelia gives Amanda the cold shoulder Amanda when she won't come clean to their pious Dad and even more pious Mom. The whole family can't get any sleep because their new baby was born blind and deaf, so she howls day and night. To top it off, hunter/trapper Dad decides it's time to move from their small cabin on the mountain in hopes on finding a bigger one out on the prairie. DUD makes compelling reading, even when the characters' actions don't make a whole lot of sense. For instance, if would be movers found a cabin with fresh blood all over the floor, most people would say "Let's get out of here!" not "Let's move in!". If the land is supposedly cursed, why are they drinking the water? Why start off by telling your new neighbors your scariest family secret? If you're a furniture maker, then why isn't your baby in a cradle? Etc. Yes, DUD is a scary tale, though it has more holes than a piece of swiss cheese. I hope Lukavics writes more novels when she plots a bit better and closes a lot more holes.
