Penelope Tredwell edits a literary magazine, The Penny Dreadful, that she inherited from her father. She also pens horror stories under the name Montgomery Flinch that captivate all of Victorian England. She's asked to help investigate mysterious behavior at the local insane asylum and soon gets caught up in a real-life tale of mystery and suspense. Readers will have to suspend disbelief that a 13-year-old girl gets away with such wild antics during this time period, but the references to Victorian authors like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and H.G. Wells add to the spooky yet entertaining Gothic setting. Fans of classic horror and mystery stories of Poe and Doyle will devour this one. The sequel is due soon.
