I generally enjoy Kenneth Oppel's works. While this one contained an interesting story, I felt confused with the details. An attack by a sasquatch is given the same weight as the striking of the "last spike". The plight of colonists (immigrants) coming to settle in Canada is dealt with the same as the hero being ensnared by a bog hag. The engineering feat of this super train is as believable as a origami "homing pigeon". It was hard to know what was based on facts (events, locations, people), and if everything was made up, nothing really had any weight for me as a reader.
