Matt Damon and Casey Affleck play two young men on a hiking trip along a wilderness trail, but the trip becomes a disaster when they wander off the trail and get lost in mountains and eventually on the salt flats of the Great Salt Lake. Loosely based on a true event, the two act quite lackadaisical about their situation for the first 50 minutes of the movie, joking back and forth using the slang term Gerry, which means “screwed up.” But then the mood turns to depression, then to hallucination, and then to desperation. Not only are they off the simple hiking trail, they become completely surrounded by some to the Rocky Mountains obviously completely and unbelievably off from their planned simple hike. For one thing, the two did not even carry one water bottle, canteen, or even any food whatsoever. Great shots of these two tiny wanderers juxtaposed against the immensity of the skyline and the mountains and valleys in which they seem hopelessly trapped.
