In 1897 England, sixteen-year-old Finley Jayne has no one…except the "thing" inside her.

When a young lord tries to take advantage of Finley, she fights back. And wins. But no normal Victorian girl has a darker side that makes her capable of knocking out a full-grown man with one punch….

Only Griffin King sees the magical darkness inside her that says she's special, says she's one of them. The orphaned duke takes her in from the gaslit streets against the wishes of his band of misfits: Emily, who has her own special abilities and an unrequited love for Sam, who is part robot; and Jasper, an American cowboy with a shadowy secret.

Griffin's investigating a criminal called The Machinist, the mastermind behind several recent crimes by automatons. Finley thinks she can help—and finally be a part of something, finally fit in.

But The Machinist wants to tear Griff's little company of strays apart, and it isn't long before trust is tested on all sides. At least Finley knows whose side she's on—even if it seems no one believes her.

I read the HC edition of this but I could not find the prequel "The Strange Case Of Finley Jayne" but it was part of this edition. Took about 30 minutes to read and was worth the hold time to be able to read the short story!

Borrowed this one and book 2 at the same time. Read both and only wish I had book 3 right now to read. Great read, made me laugh and feel for the characters

This story ran like a bad harlequin romance. Wait! That is just what it is but for teens. Ugh. There are so many more interesting books for teens to read. Try Starcrossed or Hold Me Closer, Necromancer.

Dr. Jekyll/Mr Hyde + steam punk + gentle men + a super strong heroine who totally kicks butt

I actually really enjoyed this book. Really. As in, IhatethatIhavetowaitanotheryearbeforeIgettoreadthenextone!!! It is probably going to be the biggest steampunk teen book over the next year or so (despite the fact the steampunk has already been trickling into the popular fiction for a little while now), and while I have read better books, I loved the characters – I loved the other guy – and I think Kady Cross really set up a very interesting new world for many more adventures to happen in.
