In London, 1931, the controversial artist Nick Bassington-Hope falls to his death. The police rule it an accident, but Nick's twin sister, Georgina, a wartime journalist, isn't so sure. When the authorities refuse to consider her theory that Nick was murdered, Georgina seeks out an old classmate from Girton College, Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and investigator, for help. Before long the case leads Maisie to the desolate beaches of Dungeness in Kent, and into the sinister underbelly of the city's art world.

I love the Maise Dobbs series. They are mysteries (or probably a better description is detective stories) set in England. THe first book is set in 1929 or 30 and they go on from there chronologically. So far in the ones I've read there's always a connection to World War I and how those events continued to shape the lives of people for the next decades.

The books are well plotted, have strong ongoing character development, fascinating period details and lots of historical context. Plus some detective work, some romance and very little gore.
