Kinda starts boring but it gets more interesting when Aisling shows up

This film beautifully depicts Ireland's fusion of Catholic and mythic/pagan culture. Themes of friendship and sharing permeate the film. This is a film for adults and older kids; it would be too frightening for very young children. My only complaint is that some of the non-Irish characters were depicted as stereotypes, not as individuals.

idiosyncratic, but sometimes difficult, animation. Decent story, but the trouble in distinguishing characters makes it hard to follow.

A wonderful movie!! The art style was really outstanding to me, it was very unique and enjoyable. The story was also very interesting. Definitely worth watching!

At this writing, this exciting, mysterious, beautifully acted and animated film has zero holds on it, though it was recently released -- why? I can only guess it's because it's not the same old Disney thing. SPOILERS: the hero does go on a journey, but it's as much a mental and metaphysical journey as a physical one. His quest is to save and add to a book, not rescue a princess, even indirectly. There is an animal sidekick; however, it is a cat who does not talk, sing, or tell obnoxious jokes. The story espouses the virtues of running away, over fighting back against all odds, and the monks and Vikings don't resolve their differences and live in harmony. There is a haunting Irish soundtrack, but no radio-ready self affirmation anthems, or jaunty tunes about making ink and building walls. Most of the animation is deliberately flat, Samurai Jack style, as a tribute to the art of the Book of Kells. And in fairness to the doubters, the script needs one more draft, to adequately resolve the forest girl story and other loose threads. SPOILER ENDS: however if you want a film that you and your children will find challenging and memorable, this is the one.

This multi-country European production has many rave reviews, and it does have some very impressive looking images high in artistic value. However, as a `motion-picture` film I have to say the very `two-dimensional` animation leaves me wanting. Perhaps for the younger audience it may be OK but I have been spoiled by the `Miyasaki` level of hand-drawn animation quality that I find the style used here lacking. The sound track is great. So I still got something out of it.

An absolutely gorgeous film. All my kids, age 6 and 9 were riveted. Just another off-brnd classic like Monster in Paris or Triplets of Belleville.

This story was very interesting and a great fantasy. If it was a book I would probably read it. The story line is well written even though it can get a little confusing at parts. They're almost as good as Disney, maybe even better in some aspects. :)

The story and characters are nice, and the animation is pretty beautiful.. It's nice to get away from all the CGI stuff for a while..

Beautiful animation, and valuable Irish history.
