This book was mostly what we Obama fans have already heard or read elsewhere but there were a few photos I hadn’t seen elsewhere and I learned a few new things. Such as how witty both Barack and Michelle Obama are, if we can rely on the quotations the author provides. (I’m always a bit leery of books like this that just give source information for each chapter as a whole rather than for specific statements.) I was also delighted to discover that President Obama’s mother attended Eckstein Middle School in Seattle. Our son will be attending the same school next year and was delighted to learn of the Obama connection. Apparently Obama’s mother was bussed to the North end school from the Columbia City neighborhood where her family lived for a year or so before moving to Mercer Island where Ann went to high school. The author of this “Portrait of an American Marriage” writes about the tensions in the Obama marriage caused by Barack’s political ambitions but also makes it clear that the love and devotion Barack and Michelle have for each other is strong and steadfast. Here’s hoping they live in the White House for eight years!
