This rhyming picture book opens with the lines:
"a knife and a fork and a spoon are a family;
The stars and the sun and the moon are a family;
The socks in the drawer;
And the rocks on the shore; And the books on the floor; They can all become families..."

This creative, metaphorical expansion of the idea of "families" to include categories of things, (similar to Hoberman's creative expansion of the idea of "house" in "A House is a House for Me") is interesting and though-provoking but is probably not the best choice for introducing the concept of family to young children. Also, if you're looking for a book to introduce the modern diversity of what is considered a family, you will not find it here. Mark Boutamant's illustrations are colorful and inviting, and Hoberman's text is fun but not particularly informative. This might be a good book to introduce AFTER children already understand more about what families are, and also to help them understand categorization concepts.
