This is a 1962 epic war drama based on Cornelius Ryan's book "The Longest Day (1959)."
The film depicts the D-Day landings at Normandy on June 6, 1944, during World War II.
It was directed by Ken Annakin (British and French exteriors), Andrew Marton (American exteriors), and Bernhard Wicki (German scenes).
Although it is based on the book, this film appears like an action-packed documentary without glorified episodes.

Anyone with an interest in learning about the relatively minor role played by Britain and the US in the war against Germany will probably learn a lot from this movie about the Normandy invasion. It was done in 1962 when all the major actors at least remembered the actual event. The movie is almost a study in big name actors of the mid-20th Century in addition to being a middling protrayal of a smaller piece of the war than Americans and Brits care to admit.

This is one of the BEST depictions of the D-Day Invasion. The details of the English, Canadian, French & German sides to the whole day's battle. A very good account of the History of WWII.

If you like war movies and ones that are all true, this is a great movie. Henry Fonda leads the cast of US Navy generals. It is one of his better film roles. A sure five stars!!!

One of the best films I have seen in this year. It was entertaining and interesting. Great performances a must see for all. Truly a really great movie worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box. Well worth the price of admission to any theater

Tremendous dramatization of D-Day from 20th Century Fox creator Darryl F. Zanuck, based on Cornelius Ryan's novel. Huge, HUGE cast of top billed talent, and three individual directors for the British, American, and German sequences. God bless the Allied veterans for their bravery and sacrifice, and for the freedoms we enjoy today because of them. A fine film of a singular event of incomprehensible guts that crushed a tyranny. FIVE STARS.

John Wayne is fantastic !

By far this is one of the best 'epic' movies Hollywood has ever produced; everyone and his dog is in this film and the fact that it's just the events shown from both sides is brilliant- there's none of the usual tripe of US war films. The Longest Day is up there with Bridge on the River Kwai, Battle of Britain, A Bridge Too Far, and Letters from Iwo Jima.

A marvelously well done movie-really shows the tragic happenings of World War II. John Wayne really portrays the strength of a general! I like in the beginning they have germans actually speaking in german! So many movies have different nationalities speaking English when it is not historically correct! This movie is worth the three hours! :) Great ending. Wow.
