A remarkable film. The setup seems to be for a winking comedy following a lovable charmer as he slips effortlessly from affair to affair. Instead it's an indictment. Alfie is the footloose rascal many a young man aspires to be, and as he pursues his vision of conquest and NSA encounters, he espouses his principles for the perfectly ordered life of a 60's London player. He often addresses the camera directly with tips for how to love and leave. But the movie isn't on the same page as Alfie, the camera is more interested in showing the protracted fallout from the glib encounter.

Shelley Winters is great as usual. Thought Michael Caine was so good in this movie. I really felt for him. Good movie

The compromise well illustrated in film; a very well done early-career performance by actor Michael Caine; demonstrating both the joy and the pain of purposely living a singular libertine lifestyle. If all that holds your interest, very much recommended.

Lewis Gilbert’s depressingly cynical film follows the exploits of one self-absorbed thirtyish libertine whose cavalier attitude seems to attract an endless stream of unhappy doormats only too happy to trade in their dignity for a place in his bed. In the title role Michael Caine’s cheeky portrayal of a selfish lout determined to look out for number one, yet secretly afraid of being alone, earned him a well-deserved Oscar nomination. His ongoing monologues aimed directly at the audience (a clever device by Gilbert borrowed from the original play perhaps?) puts us in the interesting position of being both conscience and jury. But what is the purpose behind all this deliberate provocation? What exactly is Gilbert wanting us to feel? Alfie is certainly beneath our contempt (isn’t he?) but, with one glaring exception, the doe-eyed dishrags he takes delight in misusing are not entirely sympathetic either. For all its mod flourishes and frank dialogue, the film remains terribly dated as well as socially irrelevant. Try as I might I simply can’t see the character of Alfie as a serious metaphor, nor can I glean any deeper meaning from his crass misogynistic ramblings. What we’re left with then is the tragic escapades of an arrogant and deluded emotional sadist. And that is what it’s all about, Alfie.

Very good cast, good acting, very bad script and directing. If it was not for Jude Law, I would call it a waste of time.

"Alfie" is one of Michael Caine's best pictures. Here we find him dressing up like he is a millionaire and driving a fancy sports car. None of it is true, it is just to get the attention of "Birdy's" which are beautiful women. He talks to the camera and gives us an explanation for everything. I thought it was a comedy and it is with a very strong message. Michael Caine has 7 pages of movies on the KCLS web site. Look for a charming role for Shelley Winters in her prime. Since I feel so strongly about "Alfie", I hope you will take it home and make your own decision. Let me know here with a review of your own. Love to hear from you!

This distinctly British character study masking as a raunchy comedy works for and because of Michael Caine, but not really any other reason. The women that Alfie pursues seem to all be demure wallflowers (a ribald Shelley Winters excepted) lacking any personality. Caine's performance is worthwhile, but the journey his character makes would have been more effective had the film cared a bit more about almost anything else. Really, anything.

Alfie is what you'd call an unrepentant womanizer. He is a limo driver working in New York City, which, of course, provides him ample opportunity to continue his womanizing ways. That is until reality slaps him in the face. His carnality eventually gets in the way, and he decides to change his wondering ways.
