This is the first of a series whose protagonist is Owen McKenna, a 6'6" ex-cop with a great dane for a pet and helper. Owen's girlfriend, Street Casey, is an entomologist, who contracts with police departments to determine day of death from insects inhabiting the body. The characters are likeable, but this book reads like a movie script as we get near the solution. We have Owen flying a small plane, which he hasn't done for years, over the Sierra's in a snow storm, and managing to get away with kidnapping the mother of the client, because the client, a 14 year-old girl, is rich enough to pay for lawyers, wrecked planes and cars. This might make a good TV movie. A bit over the top, but exciting.
