Optimistic theme about what's possible in American public school education. Good film demonstrating that if an inspired teacher is allowed to actually teach, and in their own way demonstrate ideas that make sense to high school students --- and not just follow school-approved lesson plans -- the results can be outstanding. Anybody who has attempted to pass the AP Calculus test knows this isn't a minor victory, it's major. On the downside, the film's directing and acting is a bit over-the-top. I suppose they did it that way in part b/c students studying the principles of calculus is hard to portray to general audiences and still make it interesting. Still, overall, recommended.

The tragedy is that our schools (and their students) continue to struggle with the same issues of social inequality, education under-funding, inappropriate or incompetent teachers and administrators, and irrelevant hurdles blocking student advancement thirty years after the events of this docu-drama.

Well worth watching. This is a solid movie with a solid plot line. The teacher and the students look and act like real people from an urban neighborhood in a realistic classroom situation. I liked that the movie was not oriented toward a sappy, feel-good sort of story. Edward James Olmos, the actor who played the lead in the film, was careful not to overdramatize his teacher character. Olmos' depiction of the teacher was sure and even-handed as he guided his students and set expectations.

Fantastic film. Moving and funny, to know that it's even partially true (in the overglossed saccharine Hollywood adaptation kind of way) is warming to the heart and mind, knowing someone cares about the future of their students as much as this. I highly recommend this classic good-teacher-turns-it-all-around film.

One of the best films I have seen in this year. It was entertaining and interesting. Great performances a must see for all. Truly a really great movie worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box. Well worth the price of admission to any theater.

"Did you know that neither the Greeks nor the Romans were capable of using the concept of zero? It was your ancestors, the Mayans, who first contemplated the zero. The absence of value. True story. You burros have math in your blood."

"There will be no free rides, no excuses. You already have two strikes against you: your name and your complexion. Because of these two strikes, there are some people in this world who will assume that you know less than you do. Math is the great equalizer... When you go for a job, the person giving you that job will not want to hear your problems; ergo, neither do I. You're going to work harder here than you've ever worked anywhere else. And the only thing I ask from you is ganas. Desire. And maybe a haircut."
