Set during de-segregation of the 1960s in rural America, this book reminded me a lot of To Kill A Mockingbird, but without the trial. The main character, Belle Teal, is a mature, thoughtful and very observant 5th grade narrator. Other themes besides racism include dementia and relationships.

Enjoyable book . Belle has a tough life but a good read on how to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative and latch on to the affirmative.
