(*Lyrics excerpt*) - "Take your passion and make it happen."

Featuring some really excellent dance sequences (along with some good soundtrack music) - "Flashdance" is a fairly entertaining film from 1983.

Just don't expect this film's story-line to grab your attention 'cause it's all pretty drab and predictable stuff (for the most part).

A 1983 musical dance film that is not set in glitzy ritzy NYC but rugged steel town Pittsburgh. Enjoyed the 2015 TV series Flesh And Bone with Ben Daniels, 1980 Fame and its 2009 remake. This one is a good watch as well though with some nudity, and awarded the Oscar for Best Original Song "Flashdance... What a Feeling" performed by Irene Cara, the very same Cara who won the same Oscar for her song in Fame.

Notes per wiki:

--- Inspired by the real-life story of Maureen Marder, a construction worker/welder by day and dancer by night in a Toronto strip club.

--- The dimly lit cinematography and montage-style editing are due in part to the fact that most of Jennifer Beals' dancing in the film was performed by a body double.

Excellent sound track. Jennifer Beals dancing fantastic. Was this her last hurrah? I seen the movie years ago. The dance scenes with water great.

Beloved for the dance sequences and soundtrack, Jennifer Beals pours her heart and soul into the role of Alex, a welder with a passion for dance and a penchant for drama.

I watched this last night for the first time in years, and sadly it wasn't as good as I remember. However, it's a nice storyline with a great message; follow your dreams. Jennifer Beals is beautiful here, but the best thing about this film by far is the music.Such wonderful songs and the soundtrack brought back so many memories of my dance classes in high school. I also have vivid memories of "Flashdance" because my dad took me to see it,even though it was rated R. As weird as it sounds, I wish there would have been more dancing in the movie. My favorite scene in this film is where Jennifer Beals' character is walking down a hallway surrounded by ballet students. She is on her way to get an application to pursue her dreams. I found that scene to be so unique, because her baggy outfit is contrasted against the ballet students' simple and flowing costumes. Such a great scene and one that is really pivotal to the story, IMO. This film does have an R rating and at first I wondered why. Sadly, by the middle of the film, we learn why; the overuse of the "F" word, other swear words, references to lovemaking and nudity as seen in a nightclub/bar. However, it shouldn't bother most since this movie isn't suitable for kids, even without the questionable material. It will definitely bore kids.

The DVD presentation was my second viewing of "Flashdance". The first was the original theatrical release which I saw on film in the theatre in 1983. I have to say, I enjoyed it then, and if anything I enjoyed it more now, 35 years later. Incredible artistic look and feel. The decrepit but honest architecture of post-steel-boom Pittsburgh, the lighting, even the actor's clothing and costumes: A visual masterpiece, even as viewed on a tv screen. And the music. Well, what can I say about the music that hasn't already been said? Ok, I'll yield to the critics below that the plot isn't exactly Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. But it isn't meant to be that. The basic plot, while a little sparse, is optimistic, edgy, and emotionally uplifting. "Flashdance" is just what it says, a feeling! Fun, visually artistic, with tunes you'll be singing to yourself for days to come; so just sit back and immerse yourself in a overwhelmingly entertaining experience. Another big plus, it holds up well to the passage of time. Very much recommended.

I'm just not into the aesthetic enough to look past the preposterous plot. Really baffling 7-8 minute sequence of back to back to back "music video sequences" in a row. Obviously made to sell the soundtrack. Congrats, I guess? Also, it turns out Beals can't even dance? I feel cheated, lol.
