In Mega City, you either punch or get hit. Sixteen-year-old Nalah leads Las Malas Criadas, one of the most powerful all-girl gangs in the city, known by many as the infamous Chief Rocka. All her life, Nalah has dreamed of living in the luxurious and selective Mega Towers, and getting away from the dirt, grit, and violence on the streets. In order to prove her allegiance to Mega City’s beloved leader and earn a spot in the Towers, Chief Rocka and the LMCs must leave Mega City in search of a mysterious and reclusive enemy gang. But when Nalah starts to learn more about how her enemies live, she is suddenly forced to ask herself what getting her greatest wish--a home--really means.
In Dealing in Dreams, Rivera paints a vivid world ruled by gangs and violence with a strict matriarchy and class hierarchy. I really enjoyed how she incorporated Hispanic culture into the setting, and how well she managed to explore the world of Mega City while still maintaining an engaging plot. However, I found the ending was anticlimactic and unsatisfying, and left the book feeling unfinished. Despite this, I would still recommend this book to anyone that likes books with dystopias, Latinx culture, organized crime, and themes of home, family, and rebellion.
