Admittedly, this takes some effort to get into, since (spoiler alert) the passage of 500 years means that almost all of the characters you grew to know and care for in the other novels are long since dead.

However, this title has rewards all its own. It's classic Card, with a child hero set against a combination of evil and less-than-perfect adults, with major moral issues and the fate of a civilization at stake. The main characters are immediately sympathetic, this time. an improvement over the first novel in the series. But this particular novel doesn't really break much new ground, and though there are some interesting mysteries, the best one is solved almost as soon as it is discovered. Not really his best, as everything feels a bit predictable. But still enjoyable. And hey, if you made it this far, might as well finish the series, right?
