I remember listening to Frank Zappa with my dad as a kid, and thinking it was super weird. Recently, I discovered that he was heavily involved in the fight against "rating" music - essentially infringement of freedom of speech in music. This was a fascinating read, where you get true insight into Zappa's life, career, and beliefs. What was more interesting was to find that Zappa is a serious and skilled composer and musician. I think I'll have to revisit those records!
