One of the Garden Home librarians recommended this book to me because I like memoirs and it was such an amazing story! The story is fast-paced and gives a lot of history of events which have taken place in Somalia. The author's story demonstrates such courage, perseverance and determination to meet his goal, which is to live in America.

I saw Abdi Iftin speak at the Boston Book Festival, was intrigued to read his book. He lives a life in terror much of the time but throughout it all he manages to stay positive. Even though it takes him years, he manages to keep jumping hurdles to achieve his dreams. Abdi is an amazing person and a wonderful example of how immigrants can continue to enrich our country as they have since the beginning. How terrible our current pres demonizes the immigrant population. He is wrong and so short sighted which makes people lives terrible all over again and causes them to live in fear. Three cheers for Abdi, I imagine he will be Pres of Somalia one day!

This is a tremendous book. I noticed a low rating, well it deserves much higher. Intriguing story, information most of us Americans really don’t know and it’s hard to even fathom what people in war torn parts of the world deal with daily. An incredible story About young man’s ability to persevere and succeed. A Great Discussion for my book club.
