Camden, NJ, 1948. When 11 year-old Sally Horner steals a notebook from the local Woolworth's, she has no way of knowing that 52 year-old Frank LaSalle, fresh out of prison, is watching her, preparing to make his move. Accosting her outside the store, Frank convinces Sally that he's an FBI agent who can have her arrested in a minute, unless she does as he says. This chilling novel traces the next two harrowing years as Frank mentally and physically assaults Sally while the two of them travel westward from Camden to San Jose, forever altering not only her life, but the lives of her family, friends, and those she meets along the way. Based on the experiences of real-life kidnapping victim Sally Horner and her captor, whose story shocked the nation and inspired Vladimir Nabokov to write his controversial and iconic Lolita, this heart-pounding story by award-winning author T. Greenwood at last gives a voice to Sally herself.

When reading this I couldn't believe it was based on a true story yet I could. Kids don't want to disappoint their parents and many believe what adults tell them. For this to have happened, for Sally not to fess up to her Mom what she had done. For her to believe Frank that he was FBI and for her Mom Ella to willingly hand over Sally to a man she thought was the father of one of Sally's friends without checking to make sure he was who he said he was is heartbreaking. I think of all the kids I know and I hope that their parents instill in them over and over no matter how bad the child messes up, they can come to their parents for help or to confess. I've told my daughter several times we might be mad at what she has done but we won't love her any less and that she shouldn't be afraid to tell us. I'm glad she's 25 now but still young girls are snatched daily. This was such a sad story to read and made me not want to put it down. I stayed up late to finish and find out what happened even though I knew the true story of Sally Horner after looking it up when I started reading this book. Well worth my time.
