How we live matters. Do we choose love or do we choose hate? Do we help or do we harm? Because there is no way to know the exact second your life changes forever. You can only begin to know that moment by looking in the rearview mirror. And trust me when I tell you when you never, ever see it coming.

This book is a challenging but important read.
I read this after reading "Just Mercy" by Bryan Stevenson. Both excellent books. "The Sun Does Shine" tells Hinton's story from his own view point and was often very touching. ("Just Mercy" was my eye-opener from the attorney's view point; gave me great admiration for Bryan Stevenson's work.)
This book is not an easy read. It's utterly heartwrenching. It's infuriating. It's also one of faith, forgiveness, and hope.
Ray Hinton was convicted of killing two people in two separate armed robberies, each a restaurant manager. He was taken into custody when a third robbery occurred and that restaurant manager survived the shooting. The manager gave a description of the perpetrator, and an employee of the restaurant (who knew and disliked Hinton) said that he knew a guy who fit the bill. They arrested Hinton despite the fact that he was at least 4 inches taller than the description and the fact that he had been signed in at work 30 minutes away that night. The crime was committed approximately 10 minutes after he signed in. It was PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE for him to have committed the crime!! It's beyond my comprehension how this could have happened in the first place, but also that it could have taken so long for anyone to listen to Hinton and/or to care enough to want to make things right.
The amazing The Sun Does Shine tells the story of Hinton's incredible strength of character and his faith. It also tells the story of Bryan Stevenson’s unceasing efforts to see Hinton set free. (Stevenson, of the Equal Justice Initiative, is definitely my hero.)
The judicial system, race relations, prison conditions, and the death penalty all need to be reviewed, discussed, examined and improved so innocent people are not sent to jail, and people in jail are treated humanely.
This book left me feeling angry and sad, but the message of hope is uplifting. The part where Hinton’s lawyer called him to tell he was going to be released, I actually cried. All those years of fighting for the truth to come out was worth it. Ray’s story shines a light on the power of hope and the human spirit.
Wow! This book was so eye opening. I am very inspired by Mr. Hinton's positivity and honesty. Also always moved by hearing of Bryan Stevenson's work. I highly recommend this book.
Great book, unbelievable that this could happen!
Doesn`t say if he was compensated for all those years behind bars!
This book blew my mind and broke my heart.

An absolutely amazing true story. Terrifying, beautiful, and inspirational. This book should be required reading for every high school in America.
