"Alanna from the Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce was one of my favorites when I was a teen. Well all of Tamora Pierce's female characters are my favorite really, I just read Alanna's books first."

Add a CommentMy favorite series of all time. It was amazing in the 80's and it's amazing now.
How have I not read these books before now? I have been missing out.
One of my all-time favorite series! This was such a breath of fresh air to my tiny tomboy self- I must have read all four books a dozen times over when I was a kid. I adored Alana for her bravery and dedication. The adventures are still fun to read as an adult- Tamora Pierce's world is rich and inviting, and it's full of wild magic, delightful characters and awe-inspiring monsters. Even 30 years later, this is one of the best books for kids featuring a female knight!
This is one of my favorite series EVER!!!! It was loaded with adventure. I couldn't put it down. I was done with it within a couple of days!
This is quite possibly my favourite series of all time. I first read it as a kid, and I regularly come back to it and read it again as an adult. Alanna is an awesome protagonist, who challenges the gender norms of her world by disguising herself as a boy and entering into training to become a knight. The world building is wonderful, the story is engaging, and Alanna herself is powerful, vulnerable, and relatable. With magic, intrigue, swordplay, and a talking cat, what more could a fantasy fan ask for? I would (and do) recommend this quartet to everyone!
The Song of the Lioness series is really nice. Tamora Pierce reminds us that women can take on men's roles as well as a man. This series reminds us of the roles that are "set" for each gender, and why they should be changed.
Yāall, who let me go this long without reading this series?! This series is instantly engaging and easy to read, but still complex. Youāll love Alanna from her first appearance, and only grow to love her more as the series progresses. I binge-read the first four books over a single weekend, and I canāt wait to delve into the rest of the Tortall world. I can see why this series is a classic for so many people. I wish I had read these books when I was a young teen! Give this a shot if you like: classic fantasy adventures, strong female protagonists, and powerful friendships.
If I had read this when I was 10 or 12, I'm sure I would have given it 5 stars. At 40+, I only read it because it was a book club selection. Despite that, I enjoyed it a lot and I'll likely read the rest of the series at some point.
As the first book in a series of four, this book has a lot of set-up work to do. For this reason, the first third (or so) is quite slow. It does pick up, though, and turn into a quick and entertaining read.
The book requires a fair amount of suspension of disbelief that nobody will realize "Alan" is really "Alanna" unless and until she tells them. But it's set in a land where magic is real, so perhaps we are to believe that she uses a little magic to make her masculinity more convincing. The book never actually says that she does this, but I'm not sure how else she was planning to fake her voice breaking. It does take the time to address a few other biological issues you'd expect a girl pretending to be a boy to have to deal with.
I am so happy I decided to reread this series. It was something I had read back in middle school -- I loved it then and I loved it now. I am grateful for authors like Tamora Pierce who created such inspiring female characters in fantastic world, proving their strength and worth. I remember how much I related to Alanna and it's no different now, expect I'm a little taller and my hair is a little less read.
This is a fantastic story about a young girl, determined to beat the odd and follow her dreams, despite what the gods have dealt her. Also, I noticed the format of the book, how it is told almost like short stories or adventures in each chapter. It's able to cover the important aspects over an increasing period of time, which I really appreciated. Love this story and can't wait to enjoy it all over again.
Loved this book!!!
I take that back, I loved the whole series!!!
It's awesome and a MUST read!!!
