In the summer of 1968, after travelling from Brooklyn to Oakland, California, to spend a month with the mother they barely know, eleven-year-old Delphine and her two younger sisters arrive to a cold welcome as they discover that their mother, a dedicated poet and printer, is resentful of the intrusion of their visit and wants them to attend a nearby Black Panther summer camp.

Wonderfully narrated by Sisi Aisha Johnson. I loved the three sisters: they are so different and special in their own way. This is a middle grade novel that anyone would enjoy. The historical aspects of the story are complex and well-sketched; the writing is believable and thoughtful.

This audio CD was an ALA notable recording for 2010, and it's easy to see why. Narrator Sisi Aisha Johnson creates fantastic voices for the three Gaither sisters, Delphine, Vonetta and Fern. Her narration makes a great story even better, and that much more fun to listen to. Highly recommended.
