I read this book without having read the others in the series, and wasn't lost or confused about the characters or the story line. The book was sort of a combination of mystery and slice of life stories. Most of the present-day characters were endearing, the characters in the 1940s-era story were multi-faceted, the mystery was interesting (if not all that thrilling) and the writing was good.
