Individual incidents make sense (or don't, especially at the beginning when Russell wakes from a concussion with severe amnesia). But these incidents don't always cohere into a complete narrative until nearly at the end. And for me, often not even then. I think the major reason was my lack of understanding of the historical realities of 1920s Morocco compared even with Palestine or India. I admired the way King used the character of the real man in charge of French Morocco to enhance the story. As always, King is a stunning writer.

International political intrigue is not easy for me to follow, apparently, because this story is over my head. It's also missing much of the Russell-Holmes banter and bond that drew me to these stories in the first place. The ending (and parts of the plot) also left me cold. That said, the descriptions at the beginning of the story, during Russell's amnesia, will probably stick with me forever. Laurie R. King writes beautifully.

(P.S. I'm not even going to try to give this a rating, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth one.)

This is a really good book, but not an easy one. If follows The Pirate King, but is much more sinister, and is tied up in
Moroccan and British Empire power struggles of the 1920's, something I'd known little about. I googled a couple of the main historical characters and caught up enough to get much more out of the story.
I really enjoyed how King portrayed the courage of Mary and of Holmes, as well as that of other characters, in seemingly hopeless situations.

I felt as if The Pirate King and Garment of Shadows had their own feel, and that kept constant. This installment is almost devastating, considering that Russell has amnesia and doesn't recall the presence of her cohort in her life. Still worthwhile, though. Definitely.

After the light romp of The Pirate King, it was a delight to get back to the richness of the Russel/King novels that hooked me.

Not one of the better Mary Russell books (I've read them all). Very slow until the final couple of chapters. WAY too much confusing early 20th century Moroccan politics...I could not keep up. skimmed most of the book. Don't recommend it

*** I enjoy Laurie King's series with Mary Russell, but wish she would set the series in Britain more often. This one takes place in Morocco and involves political intrigue that does not particularly appeal to me. Recommend if you like the characters regardless of setting.

this was a really good book! i loved how witty and smart russell was. the politics were fairly confusing, but not too hard that the story line doesn't make sense. in this book, i could see the details more clearly than the big picture. in other words, i understood what was going on at the moment but couldn't really figure out why they were doing what they were doing. i can see the setting and the general theme from this book being used for the next sherlock movie!

I enjoyed this Mary Russell story more than the previous novel, The Pirate King. This is similar to King's previous works set in the Middle East, but with more developed characters. I found the conclusion a little rapid, but otherwise a very good read, especially if you enjoy the Mary Russell series.

Overly complicated and not very interesting plot. I keep hoping for something as good as the first novels in this series. Not this time.
