The popular hero of several Tony Hillerman best-sellers, Navajo cop Jim Chee, is a student of the old ways who wanted to be a medicine man before he became a lawman. Now as a cop covering the Arizona Territories belonging to the Hopi and Navajo Indians, he's torn between both worlds. When the badly mutilated victim of a Navajo skinwalker is found on Hopi land, Chee is suddenly plunged into a world of mystery filled with drug dealers, F.B.I. agents, witchcraft, international politics and revenge.

This is much better than I thought it would be. Adaptions of Hillerman's work can be so disappointing. This movie catches the mood of his books well and the casting is good. The book has Captain Largo instead of Joe Leaphorn. The movie substituted Leaphorn for Largo and didn't get Leaphorn right - at least for me. I wonder why the films seem to have trouble embracing Leaphorn's quiet intelligence and opt for a more abrasive personality? Fans of the original Dark Shadows have the chance to watch John Karlen do his stuff in what turns out to be a pretty "juicy" role for him. The microphone that makes an appearance in several scenes isn't credited.
