"Specialist scientific fields are developing at incredibly swift speeds, but what can they really tell us about how the universe began and how we as humans evolved to play such a dominant role on Earth? John Hands extraordinarily ambitious book merges scientific knowledge from multiple disciplines and evaluates without bias or preconception all the theories and evidence about the origin and evolution of matter, consciousness, and mankind." --Amazon.com

The author tries too hard to set up controversy by establishing a wildly restrictive definition he calls neo-darwinian evolution, then showing that it omits (by his definition) numerous instances of evolution e.g. Sexual selection or punctuated equilibtium.
Good summary of state of the art knowledge of development of the universe in the first half, the second half on evolution drags for above reason, I did not finish it.
