As Darby Dixon sits in a tiny Texas church bathroom on her wedding day holding a positive pregnancy test, she realizes that marrying her fianče would be the worst decision of her life. She's never been very good at standing up for herself, but she'll sure as hell stand up for her baby. With very little cash and a ton of courage, she flees town to take a new name and start a new life. As a Marine, Scott "Trex" Trexler worked in the most treacherous, corrupt, war-torn places on earth. With his new top-secret security job, he finally has a chance to return to the one place he's felt at peace: Colorado Springs, Colorado. The moment Trex checks in at the hotel where she's working, Darby knows he's dangerous. He may want her to think he's another hotshot firefighter, along with all the others battling the nearby mountain blaze, but something doesn't add up. No way will she get involved with another man she can't fully trust - and Trex clearly isn't telling her everything. As Darby's ex gets closer and closer to finding her, both she and Trex will soon find out that what you don't know can hurt you.

Not her best work and I absolutely loved Beautiful Disaster and the sequels. I couldn't even finish it.

While I found the story slow-moving in the beginning, I also really liked Trex, Darby, and their story arc. Trex and Darby were some of the better H/h's in all of McGuire's books. My biggest frustration initially was that the story ran concurrently with McGuire's Maddox Brothers series. I was getting annoyed with that storytelling style in the MB series and had thought this new series would move on from that. Yet, the first half to 2/3 overlapped with the MB Series along with many of those characters making significant cameos. Once the story moved past what was also occurring in the Maddox Brother's series, my interest piqued and the pages turned at a swifter pace.

Due to Darby's past and despite Trex's persistence, this was an enjoyable slow-burn romance. Trex was not a Maddox and his character was refreshingly different than McGuire's previous heroes. Rather than being a groveler and annoyingly persistent, he was intuitive to Darby, patient, and respectful. He definitely made this book worth finishing. The suspense was fairly slow-burn as well, but was eerily exciting once it ramped up. There is also an overarching storyline involving the military complex that Trex and his team work for. It was lightly referred to in this book, but I sense it will continue to be a larger storyline as the series progresses. That along with Zeke and Naomi being the couple in the next book have me intrigued enough to continue. I'll have to wait and see how I feel about the overlapping storylines (if they actually do) once I continue.
