Hoping for a fresh start, an English family moves to the remote Shetland islands, eager to give their autistic son a better life. But when a young nanny's body is found hanging in the barn beside their home, rumors of her affair with the husband spread like wildfire. As suspicion and resentment of the family blazes in the community, Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez is called in to investigate. He knows it will mean his boss, Willow Reeves, returning to run the investigation, and confronting their complex relationship. With families fracturing and long-hidden lies emerging, Jimmy faces the most disturbing case of his career.

Cleeves says in her Acknowledgement page that this will be her last novel with Perez as the main character. Too bad as I enjoyed these stories. I do like her writing style. She gets the story started immediately with a murder that needs to be solved. When the detectives get called in, it is then that the relationships between the families, the small community, and between the detectives themselves gets described. Many characters in the community have grudges so they end up as suspects and as good red herrings for the real killers which Cleeves reveals only during the last few pages. She moves the action right along so that I just wanted to sit and read the book from cover to cover in one sitting. Her description of the island with its fog, bluffs, screeching gannets, sand dunes, and the sound of the waves - never over lengthy - just added to my reading pleasure.

Having spent time in Shetlands I do enjoy the description of life on these islands. The references to the mud slide issues, the decrease in oil money, and the xenophobic life in hamlets. The plot is interesting but Cleeves is not an exceptional writer. The Perez character is just too hackneyed for my taste. Still a good quick diversionary read.
