A fictional paranormal film to examine the madness of an heiress who believed her well-being depended on the constant work in her San Jose Victorian mansion, a “house of penance”, to “house” vengeful ghosts killed by the Winchester brand of firearms (instrument of death.) Beyond the dramatized fantasy, it managed to include a few special effects and miseries of gunned down confederate soldiers, massacred Native Americans and chained black slaves. A good film for fans of haunted houses.

Note:

A bargain ticket outing with ample free parking for a mansion tour especially for people living close to the Winchester Mystery House, ~$40 for adults and $20 for kids:

Got the movie, didn't think i'd like it but I did. Has you thinking 'what's gonna happen next?' throughout the whole movie, until the very end.

LOOSELY based on a true story. Not much in the way of scares--I did jump once but from surprise not fear, then nothing. Not a history, not a horror movie, not a heroes journey, not a romance. Really, not much of anything to this movie unless you really want to believe in crazy old women and spirits looking for revenge.

I've heard many mixed reviews about this film, but I had to see for myself what I think of it. And it turns out, I loved it! The story they decided to tell was very entertaining. It might not be all that accurate, and the event that takes place might not actually have happened, but despite this, it's still a great story. I had the pleasure to visit the real Winchester house in the early 2000's and it is incredible. For the film, they built a life size replica for the set and filmed it in Australia. It's fantastic. If you're a fan of the house, this film is worth watching. But if you are more interested in accuracy, I may suggest a documentary instead.

Arrest to the Winchester Rifle fortune living in a haunted house in Calif. Movie was a bit scary too much for children I think but also a bit laughable because of the stupid construction of the house.

This amazing house deserved better than this movie. And they dragged Helen Mirren into it too.

Inspired by true events. On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world. Built by Sarah Winchester, (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren) heiress to the Winchester fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an incessant twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms. To the outsider it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman's madness. But Sarah is not building for herself, for her niece (Sarah Snook) or for the brilliant Doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) whom she has summoned to the house. She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters.

The first company Oliver Winchester (Sarah's father-in-law) owned was a men's shirt company (Winchester & Company) with his twin brother Samuel. In the 1860s, Winchester invested in Volcanic Repeating Arms Company that produced a revolver designed by Horace Smith & Daniel Wesson (yes, Smith & Wesson). When the company went bankrupt, he bought the company out and cleared the debt of $57,000.

Trivia
Lionsgate bought the film and photography rights to the Winchester Mansion for this film. So now tourists are not allowed to take any pictures of the interior of the mansion, because a tourist photo would be in direct competition with a Hollywood movie.

*Spoiler Alert*, read quotes to refresh key points after watched the film:

Sometimes we all need a little help to see the difference between reality and illusion. And that's about taking control, about not letting fear control you. Because fear in the end only exists in your mind.

She spent the last 20 years expanding it (an eight room house originally.) What stands now is a gargantuan seven storied structure, with no apparent rhyme or reason, no master plan, each maze of halls more confusing than the next. A house under never-ending construction, built on the orders of a grieving widow whose mind is as chaotic as the house itself.

I understand the Winchester is still considered the superior rifle on the market, ma'am.
-Superior? Superior at what?
Accuracy, range, stopping power.
-Killing. Indiscriminate killing. Very superior.
You feel responsible for the misuse of your product? If a weapon works as intended, one can hardly call it a misuse.
-Well, it can be used for good or bad, depending on the person wielding it.
===
See, profiting from such a thing as violence and death, that is a wickedness that follows you like a shadow. Yes, we might also call those shadows "guilt."
===
You know, I keep records of all the lives a Winchester has taken. Hundreds have been reported. Probably thousands haven't. The guilty, the innocent... The rifle doesn't discriminate. And many of the souls make their way to this house.

So 13 is a devilish number to protect you from devils?
-No, no, no. That is a divine number, to protect the cycle of life and death.
===
They want me to reconstruct the rooms that they died in, then they can enter our world. And the trouble is, I don't always know who it is I'm speaking with. It could be some innocent bystander or a victim of a crime, or someone else.
===
I show them my deep remorse. I want to help them let go of their grief and their anger.
-And how do they react?
Favorably. Yes, mostly. Once they are at peace, then they can move on. We can tear down their room, and then we start again.
-And are there those that don't react so favorably?
Yes. Yes, we lock them away.
-How does one lock a spirit away?
Thirteen nails seals them in. Once they find peace, we can release them, and they can leave this house.

She has created a vessel for the deceased to communicate with her. She's certainly created some architectural oddities.
===
Do you know who the most terrifying monster is, Doctor?
-No.
The one you invite into your own home.
===
The farmer's old mule fell into his well. …The farmer heard... He heard the mule crying. And it broke his heart. He chose to bury the animal in the well and put it out of its... Its hardship. He started shoveling. The mule realized that every time dirt fell on his back, he could shake it off and step up. Shovel after shovel. He could shake it off and he could step up... Shake it off. It wasn't long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped over the wall of that well. What should have buried him... Saved him. And he overcame...
===
What are you going to do next?
-Rebuild, of course.
