A good, intriguing Detective film! A rare glimpse into the seedier parts of the Egyptians life, politics and police culture, and yes, corruption! The corruption is so widespread and so accepted that it is hard for the even good policemen and politicians not to be part of taking bribes! The temptation is just too strong! The police are underpaid in Egypt, as they are in many Third-World Countries! Not excusing it, just explaining it!
That does not mean that there no detectives or policemen that do want to get at the truth and get justice for the victims, even at a great personal cost! And such is this hero detective in this story! He is pragmatic about the Egypt's political reality and how the society and police departments work, no matter how he feels about their illegal activities and power abuses! He learned how to cope and survive in such an environment! And it is a necessary skill!
He gets involved with a very, beautiful, talented lounge-singer! He is mesmerized by the music, her voice and beauty! He was surprised to find out that the lives of these talented singers were not so straightforward, but wrought with danger and possible violence! They were meer pawns in a much bigger game of the rich and powerful, incl the police and the Egyptian Security org!

This story mystery involves the Sudanese ethnic minorites working in Egypt, some legally and some not! Their existence in Egypt is precarious, even when legal! The prejudice and racism are ever-present! Abuse is rampant! Even the Egyptian prisons are considered to be too good for the Sudanese! 'Prisons are for the Egyptians only!'

He seeks to protect his only living witness, who happens to be Sudanese! It is hard for him to get the Sudanese people to trust him! They do not trust the Police, with a very good reason, with such a high rate of abuse towards them, even from the official police!
His Witness is a Survivor, yet, very vulnerable, nevertheless! Too many powerful people want the Witness and him to disappear! His Uncle's position in the Police Department offers him a certain protection, but not a guarantee!
As smart and astute as this Detective is, he had no idea how deep the corruption went nor who will betray him next!
A story with lots of twists and turns! A thriller!
There were a couple of unfinished sub- plots! For instance, we never did learn whether the Detective learns of the torture of his likeable, personable, loyal subordinate nor do we know what happened to this young man later! This can be frustrating!
Over-all, a very good story and a wonderful acting by all the cast! Do see it!

Based on a true story crime drama that highlighted the ubiquitous corruption in Egypt soon after the Arab Spring that originated in Tunisia. For a foreigner, eye opening sights and sound of Cairo, such as the street prayers. Though the script, sets, cinematography, sound etc are not up to Hollywood standard, it is a bold political statement in that part of the world. And the main man Fares Fares, with many major roles in international films as in “Department Q” and “Tyrant,” was most engaging, wearing an intense disillusioned face as a trapped man playing his part in a kleptocracy.

During the corruption at the end of the Mubarek regime, a non-angelic police detective investigates the murder of a night club singer. Would this be the first Egyptian film noir? With the addition of a few Hitchcockian camera shots, this could have been a five star film. While the film takes place during the corruption filled Mubarek period, the sad thing is that the Egyptian people selected a religious fundamentalist to replace the corrupt Mubarek regime, which was then overthrown by the people which resulted in regime as corrupt as the Mubarek regime.

Described by some as “Arabic Film Noir”, Tarik Saleh’s politically charged murder mystery certainly borrows from the genre. In a grim Cairo of teeming slums and garbage-strewn streets, police commander Noredin is called in to investigate the murder of a beautiful young singer at the upscale Nile Hilton hotel. Sensing something is amiss almost from the beginning, Noredin’s inquiries will lead him into a very dangerous world of government corruption and deadly cover-ups. Set against a backdrop of political upheaval (the story takes place during the waning years of Hosni Mubarak and the Arab Spring) Saleh’s film is tainted with ice cold cynicism and a sense of outrage with the chain-smoking Noredin—not above accepting a bribe himself—becoming an Egyptian everyman figure watching his country continually circle the drain. Chaos and criminality seem to be the order of the day and only money and family ties offer any chance of survival. And those ties can prove tenuous even at the best of times. Strikingly composed and surprisingly frank in its depiction of casual sex and drugs, Saleh has indeed produced a standout example of contemporary noir.

I pay £180 a day to rent the car. Give them to me and I will install the meter. These rotten people who govern us, tax us to death and they get treated abroad. We can't even afford cigarettes. But for a gentleman like you... Did you see what they did to the young man in Alexandria? Those cop fxckers beat him to death. Did you know? Son of a bitch! The smart guys on the Internet published photos. There will be a demonstration on January 25th. On Police Day, to rub it in. We will show those pigs what the people think of them. I'm going there. And you, will you go?
