The opera eschews traditional narrative in favor of a formalist approach based on structured spaces laid out by Wilson in a series of storyboards. The music was written in the spring, summer and fall of 1975. It is Glass's first and longest opera score, taking approximately five hours in full performance without intermission, The work became the first in Glass's thematically related Portrait Trilogy, along with Satyagraha (1979), and Akhnaten (1983).

10 out 10 for the performers' commitment, but ¼ to ½ star out of 5 for the quality of musical composition (it's not a full-on zero because there are things that one can take and develop on, although the tally is a mere pittance). This kind of repetitveness is perverse and intellectually insulting, no matter how one justifies/explains it (yes, all the philo-babble for nothing).
Needless to say, I am partial against Minimalism. But, I am more than allowed, because I am a professional classical musician.
