More than sixty years after one of four friends in a reputedly haunted boarding school goes missing, journalist Fiona Sheridan resolves to learn her sister's fate before a harrowing discovery is made. Vermont, 1950: There's a place for the girls whom no one wants: the troublemakers, the illegitimate, the too smart for their own good. It's called Idlewild Hall. And in the small town of Barrons, there are rumors that the boarding school is haunted. Four roommates bond over their whispered fears-- until one of them mysteriously disappears. 2014: Journalist Fiona Sheridan cannot stop revisiting the events surrounding her older sister's death twenty years earlier; Deb's body was found lying in the overgrown fields near the ruins of Idlewild Hall. Now the Hall is being restored by an anonymous benefactor, and shocking secrets are uncovered-- secrets that were meant to stay hidden in the past... and a voice that won't be silenced.

Opinion

From Library Staff

Parallel narratives, one set in Vermont 1950 and the other in Vermont 2014, are woven together in this intricate mystery. Timely themes of violence toward women and abuses of power resonate throughout. A well-crafted and unsettling tale for fans of Gothic horror and female centered thrillers.

Old murders and old ghosts make for one fantastic novel in The Broken Girls. I'm not usually one for ghost/paranormal stories. But in Simone St. James' capable hands, that particular story line adds intrigue even as it ties seamlessly into the other story threads for a well-written, captivating book.

Spooky and fascinating! An exciting mystery across generations, combined with an eery ghost story. I LOVED reading this book! I’m really sad I've finished it. Definitely one of my favourite reads so far this year.

There was a creepiness to parts of the story that I enjoyed but these moments didn’t advance, or really have much to do with, the actual plot. To me, this was poorly written and included minimal character or story development. Very disappointing.

Well written story. One you can't guess the twists in it.

This is the perfect book for lovers of atmospheric ghost stories. Set in a small town in Vermont, Fiona Barton is trying to figure out why someone wants to restore the creepy boarding school where her sister's body was found 20 years ago. With a great back story and a ghost that gave me chills, this was a fast-paced mystery perfect for a cold day.

the author writes well enough, but I could not get into the characters or the story. Returned it after 100 pages.

I LOVED this. I always enjoy St. James's books but this title is without a doubt my absolute favourite one. An addictive and ultra-atmospheric ghost story/mystery chock full of twists and turns. I could not put it down.

Murder, mayhem, and a bit of mystical. It's a story that engages and reads as light and entertaining.

"Mary Hand, Mary Hand, dead and buried under land.... Faster, faster. Don't let her catch you. She'll say she wants to be your friend...."

Author Simone St. James does a brilliant and seamless job at blending a mystery/thriller with a bit of paranormal/ghost story! That aspect alone kept my read chilling, mysterious, and hard to put down.

This book alternates time periods and main characters to tell the stories and myths surrounding the all girls boarding school of Idlewild Hall. Fiona is a journalist who's sister was murdered and placed in the old field on Idlewild's grounds. She learns that a rich benefactor has bought it to restore the school, she can't help but wonder who and why.

We also follow a group of girls who are roommates and attend the school in the 1950's. They are all girls who, in some way, have been discarded by both their families and the world. One goes missing on weekend, and the course of the remaining girls' lives change forever.

There is also a myth that a ghost named Mary wanders the grounds in a black dress and veil and has been around since the school was built. She has a supernatural way to get into people's minds to whisper exactly what people fear most about their lives.

Are all these stories connected? Who killed Fiona's sister? What happened to the missing roommate? Is Mary real or just a myth?

The one thing I can say about this book is READ IT!!!
It was my first read by the author, but I have already added his other books to my TBR pile!

Thanks to Netgalley and Berkley Publishing Group for allowing me an egalley to read and give my honest review.

Watch out for Mary Hand...don't let her in! Whispered from student to student at Idlewild Hall, scribbled in ancient text books, passed down from generation to generation, this chilling advice is worth following. After all, the terrifying woman in black who roams the grounds and buildings of this Vermont boarding school may be murderer...ghost or not. This creepy, suspenseful thriller gets high marks for atmosphere and the skillful blending of past and present.
