"Hang on to your butt in the Big Sleazy."
Along with James Ellroy, James Lee Burke is the best crime writer in America. His best known character is Louisiana cop Dave Robicheaux, a Vietnam vet and recovering alcoholic who is raising a family while dealing with some truly bad men. His books are always engaging and entertaining, but they also have an understanding of evil that is missing from most literary fiction. If you haven't read anything by him, this is a good one to start with.
