My father used to label these superfluous efforts as "chewing gum for the brain." Many of the critical comments below are bang on. But for a limp and a few bruises the lost trio looked well fed and groomed. The director (Hany Abu-Assad) seems to be more in his element with Palestinian freedom fighter and other assorted movies about terrorism. The Strathcona library still retains a copy of The Snow Walker which is similar in many ways to The Mountain Between Us though twice as realistic and intelligent. In signing off, one thing I will say is that Kate Winslet is still as beautiful as she was in Titanic so this reviewer allows one star for that!

If you have read the book, don't bother watching this movie. The book is excellent, the movie not worth your time.

Book is soooooo much per usual. However I stuck with it to see how it differed from the novel. If you haven't read the book then you probably won't mind this story.

Read the comments and follow your gut feelings. This is a bad stupid movie. Best actor was the dog. They always found a cave to stay in and there was a cozy fire just blazing away. We almost turned it off but decided to go it to the very end.

Appears to be an enormously popular movie (both at the library--over 306 people in the queue since I took it out less than 2 weeks ago; hugely profitable at the box-office) often the case with a movie that really offers nothing more than undemanding feel-good entertainment.

Make no mistake: despite how the movie was promoted, this is NOT a suspenseful "survival" story (for a new one that really delivers, see Jungle, with former Harry Potter style, Daniel Radcliffe). This is a romance.

I won't spoil the fun by providing the details of the too-convenient and unrealistic conceits in the aftermath of the plane crash that strands white woman and black man (hey, it's the 21st century!) on the peaks of the Rockies. These will frustrate viewers looking for realism. Advice: look elsewhere.

As a romance? Better, although both performers have done better work, but you could say the same of every movie star in Hollywood history. Watched it with friends...the women in the group all applauded at the end. There you go: all you really need to know.

Loved the book...the movie, not so much! The only thing the 2 have in common is a mountain, a crash & 2 survivors. READ the book!

Nice mountain scenery. High school ending. That's about it.

Been ignoring this DVD until reading some of the positive comments herein. Surprised how engaging, at times riveting the story was about three strangers: a man, a woman and ... a dog. Kudos to the two stellar actors, the wintry Rocky Mountains (though actual location was in British Columbia) and the rest of the film makers.

Didn't know what to expect from this movie. I was afraid it was going to be some grim, tragic survival movie with a little romance thrown in before everyone died, or something. Pleasantly surprised that it was both serious and romantic. Elba and Winslet were convincing, and the directing was to the point. Enjoyable.

Not bad, not great. Solid acting, nice camera work, some humor, but best taken with a couple glasses of wine.

Surprised that this quote from the book was left out the movie:
“... the mountain between us is one I cannot climb .”
We can go three weeks without food, three days without water, and three hours without shelter.
I owe you an apology. I did find that beacon. I saw it. It was smashed to pieces.
-No, you didn't know that when you came looking for me, did you?
If we stay here we're safe. If we leave, search and rescue, they're less likely to find us.
-Look, I don't want to die up here because you're too scared to take a risk. We have to do something.
Ben... do you actually know what it means to be reckless? It means to abandon safety.
- I know exactly what it means, Alex. And sometimes... But right now... Right now, we don't have a choice, okay? Nobody knows where we are. You know, all we have is me and you.
And the heart is just a muscle. Right?
-What idiot said that?
