Ann Hamilton is a professor's daughter who is a young bride married to an industrialist. She begins to suspect that her charming husband is really a psychotic who plans to murder her. What starts out as a noirish thriller swiftly becomes a turgid soap opera full of unlikely revelations, ridiculous twists, and the type of ham-fisted performances one would not expect from the likes of Hepburn and Taylor. The talents of co-stars Robert Mitchum, Marjorie Main, and Edmund Gwenn are similarly wasted. At least the music is pleasant (André Previn served as supervisor) and the B&W cinematography sparkles all the way from D.C. to S.F.

This film is presented as a noir, or, as they put it at the time, a "thriller drama". In fact, it is a star vehicle for Katherine Hepburn, recalling earlier and better times. There's a little Philadelphia Story here, a little Alice Adams and Little Women there. Everyone gives a dreadful performance, in his or her own peculiar way. Robert Taylor is obviously frightened of Miss Hepburn, and Robert Mitchum is obviously not.
