During a campaign for reelection, the crooked politician Paul Madvig decides to clean up his past, refusing the support of the gangster Nick Varna and associates with the respectable reformist politician Ralph Henry. When Ralph's son, Taylor Henry, a gambler and the lover of Paul's sister Opal, is murdered, Paul's right arm, Ed Beaumont, finds his body on the street. Nick uses the financial situation of The Observer to force the publisher Clyde Matthews to use the newspaper to raise the suspicion that Paul Madvig might have killed Taylor.

This is a 1942 film noir directed by Stuart Heisler, based on the novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammett.
The film is mostly done for entertainment purposes, as it lightly skips over the corrupt political process as merely background for the unlikely love story developing between the engaging Veronica Lake and the deadpan Ladd.
Although the first adaptation was made in 1935, this remake improves the original while replacing the stolid George Raft with the charismatic Alan Ladd.
Besides, the American political system is depicted as far less damning probably because the studio wanted to increase the box-office earnings.
In any case, the love between Veronica and Alan doesn't appear well-developed.

Favorite Movie Quote: "Go peddle your little scandal to someone who wants to hear it."

Ah! - The Fabulous 40's.... Released in 1942 - The Glass Key definitely ranks right up there as one of my 'fave' Mystery/Action Flicks of all time.

This one is truly a cinematic gem from one of the most unique eras in movie-making history. The Glass Key epitomizes that particular era to a 'T'. With an excellent cast, a tight script, and plenty of rock'em-sock'em action - The Glass Key is 1940's Film Noir par excellence.

This intricately woven murder-mystery was adapted for the silver screen from Dashiell Hammet's best-selling novel of the same name.

The Glass Key stars - Alan Ladd as Ed Beaumont, Veronica Lake as Janet Henry, and Brian Donlevey as Paul Madvig. In its initial release The Glass Key was a phenomenal box-office hit. It immediately established both Ladd and Lake as major motion picture stars of the 40's.

The Glass Key is a fine example of 40's movie-entertainment.
