Wonderful movie! Shows how music can bridge both the hearing and deaf communities.
A great movie in so many ways, detailing the hearing impaired and the ignorance that sometimes goes along with it. The two dynamic and sometimes explosive lead actors William Hurt and Marlee Matlin bring life to the deaf culture. In this day and age, those of us who are not visibly impaired or even noticeably impeded continually face daunting tasks.
I know that from personal experience that one doesn't have to be deaf, mute, blind or in a wheelchair to feel the sting of ignorance. I was once told by a so-called 9th grade Biology Teacher(I use this word very loosely) Mr. Steels whom I asked for extra help - "You are not entitled to extra help as you are not in the 80-90% average". It was a reality that cruelly continued through school even when I apply to University or College in Canada. I had applied to an American school for a Children's Literature Course and was warmly welcomed into their domain without such prejudice. I will continue until I finish this course and become the writer from within.
