A wonderful book. Definitely does justice to the first book, Divergent. If you are a teen, you should definitely read this. Absolutely love this book!!!

The effect of a choice is powerful, it can either change you for the better or it can destroy you. Tris Prior's initiation day should have been a celebration of her chosen faction's triumph. Rather, it came to an end with unspeakable horrors. As the tension between the factions and their beliefs worsens, war looms. Tris must completely accept her Divergence, despite not knowing what comes after she does. Insurgent takes place after the shocking events of Divergent and continues following Tris as she grasps through her new identity and life. I didn’t find Insurgent as captivating as Divergent. Although it did have a lot of action, conflict, and plot twists, I found a lot of unnecessary repetition that left both the book and characters with no development. Some aspects that I did enjoy, however, was how Tris continued to be a character who was very realistic by being both resilient yet very stubborn. I didn’t enjoy Insurgent as much as I did with Divergent, however, I would still recommend readers to continue the Divergent series to read this because of how interesting the interactions were among all of the factions and how they viewed each other. I would say the conflict among the factions was more interesting than the same frustrating conflicts that the characters had.

Taking on a much starker tone than the first book in the series, Insurgent follows on the enthralling plotline of series header Divergent, plunging protagonist Beatrice Prior into a city roiling with civil war. The various factions, once seemingly incorrigible, now fight each other to force their viewpoints and ideals onto the rest of known society. Beatrice and her love interest Tobias are thrown into a world of conflict and they have to choose the lesser of two evils to help, or face the consequences from members of their own factions.
The middle section of the book, a profound and slower-paced part detailing Beatrice dealing with fear mechanisms, was especially powerful, providing a contrast to the constant action taking place in the rest of the series.
I would recommend this book to readers finishing the first book, although those who have already done so may not need further encouragement.

While the first book had a lot of potential, this one kind of fell short for me. Nothing is particularly memorable, even though there is certain disjointed action and a look into the different factions. We still get to see how Tris and Four's relationship blooms and how they look out for each other, which I can appreciate but overall this book didn't do it for me.

Eh, seemed very messy, with a very disjointed plot. Roth definitely is no Tolkien, Collins, or even Rowling. Not bad, but barely good.

This novel just feels messy. It's ridiculously long for no particular reason, and I couldn't even begin to describe to you the plot- not because there is none, but because there seem to be so many things happening that have no point or consequence and I wouldn't be able to distill it down into a proper summary. There are a few key things I can recall about this book that will stick with me; we are introduced to Amity, Candor and the factionless, and understand their rules, their part in society and their way of life. Tris allows herself to get kidnapped and tortured at some point by the Erudite, and Marcus plays a rather important role because he's the last of the Abnegation privy to some important information. That's really it. The rest is just noise- a spy mission here, a chase scene there, someone shooting someone else, a side character dying. It felt like a disjointed yo-yo at times. This book really suffered from lack of editing. About 200 pages really should have been culled to make the story more succinct, and it would have pulled together nicely. As it sits? There's some good moments, but the bulk of it is forgettable and muddled.

Four just gets cuter and cuter, while Caleb becomes more of a jerk.

It’s been a while since I’ve read the prequel, and I needed a refresher in order to read this book. Reason being that this book doesn’t give you any recaps. The story begins immediately after Divergent and jumps straight into the action, which I actually don’t mind. If I had recently read Divergent, I think I would probably be pretty bored reading through the recaps if there were any. Betrayal was a very prominent theme in this book. You would constantly see people switching sides and then switching back over again, making you wonder when the next betrayal will happen and who it would be. The non-stop action in this book is what kept me hooked, what kind of sucks is that this book ends on a cliff-hanger. But I guess the author did that on purpose so that I would want to read the next book as soon as possible, and it’s working because I really do. I recommend you read this book if you have recently read Divergent since the story would still be fresh in your mind. 4.5/5 @firstname_lastname of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

Insurgent by Veronica Roth (the second book of the Divergent series) is a story centered around Beatrice Prior (known as Tris), who lives in a city in which people are divided into factions. There are 5 factions each with different ideals, and normal people has the aptitude for a single one. However, Tris doesn't have the aptitude for one, nor two, but three different factions. People with aptitudes for multiple factions are known as Divergents. One of the factions, Erudite, pursues Divergents with the intent of killing them. Tris, with the assistance of her boyfriend Tobias Eaton, escaped an attack staged by the Erudite against the Abnegation in which Dauntless soldiers were drugged having their mind altered in a way that gave the Erudite complete control over their bodies. However, the Erudite continue searching for the Divergent. Tris and her friends continue to escape from them and traitor Dauntless members, while also finding out more about the truth surounding the dystopian world she has known.
I enjoyed reading Insurgent and the rest of the series greatly. I really like the way the author creates a strong fluid central plot that is not broken drastically in any way throughout the entire series, even with the many surprising and unpredictable, but appropriate and thrilling, plot twists. However, the ending was overly dramatic and was very surprising.
Overall, I give Insurgent 4.5 stars out of 5 and the series a 4 stars out of 5. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dystopian fiction especially with social classes. -Nikolai, Grade 8

I personally really enjoyed this book and thought it was a nice followup to Divergent. Throughout the book her grief and regret for killing Will grows and it never dies down, but not in an annoying way. We see Tris and Tobias having troubles in their relationship just like a real relationship but there are still sweet moments. In conclusion it really was a well written book.

“"So, the thing we’re all not talking about,” he says. He gestures to me. “You almost died, a sadistic pansycake saved you, and now we’re all waging some serious war with the factionless as allies.”
“Pansycake?” says Christina.
“Dauntless slang.” Lynn smirks. “Supposed to be a huge insult, only no one uses it anymore.”
“Because it’s so offensive,” says Uriah, nodding.
“No. Because it’s so stupid no Dauntless with any sense would speak it, let alone think it. Pansycake. What are you, twelve?”

Background info about Divergent: It's all about the Erudite wanting to controll the Dauntless people to attack the Abnegation.
Now in Insurgent, Tris, Tobias and others of the Abnegations went to Amity headcorters to seek shelter. The Erudite found out and everyone had to run again. Then one night out of no where two of Tris's friends were being controlled and jumped off the building threatening that if one divergent person is not in the Erudite headcorters by__ this would happen again.
Basically, it is a fast pace book with people on the edge of their chairs waiting for what is to come in this book.
