Ok, it's sci-fi....not what I expected. I just thought it was okay, but could have been better.

What else can be added to the many comments listed below that I also agree with. The soul of the story has been lost in this translation to real life action. While a lot of the CGI and special effects are amazing the story basically a cheap rip off of Robocop. There is no complexity in the dialogue or the story. There is no character development or storyline progression - the entire movie basically comes across like someone is trying to cherry pick favourite scenes from the graphic novel but not link them together.

Average, bland, uninspired, monotone.... That is not how you should be describing a Ghost in the Shell movie, but it is. Scarlett was awful. Probably her worst acting performance ever. Her voice was weak, for some reason, and the Major is not weak, even when dealing with catastrophic events. Some odd casting choices, but the choice for Batou grew on me. He surprised me as being the only interesting character there. The cast is multi-ethnic, but that's in keeping with how the characters look in the Anime and Manga. It's a future Tokyo and it would be multi-ethnic. But the scenes start and then end; there's no real transition between them. There is no flow or rhythm to the movie. The action scenes were bland and the fact they were fighting cybernetically enhanced people didn't really factor into the fights, which could've been innovative and unique. Instead, it's just a bar fight. It had some nice visuals, but anything not DIRECTLY from the source material fell flat on its face.

What a disappointment. I hoped this would be a great opportunity to expand and update the ideas expressed in the source materials. Unfortunately, they did not. Yes, it looks great but the best moments are lifted (poorly) from the original anime. The complex plot and themes have been pared down to a government conspiracy and a last minute love story. Forced dramatic moments litter the movie with no emotional impact because they didn't bother to develop the characters. All this is pushed along by terribly written dialogue interspersed with unnecessary gun battles. Sure there's a lot of nods to the anime but if you're a fan I would not recommend this movie unless you want to yell at your TV a lot.

Since it is a Hollywood tribute to the original "Ghost in the Shell" released in 1995, clearly dated sci-fi about a super female cyborg looking for her past and making her own fate. Nonetheless, a highly entertaining faithful remake with cutting edge special effects that featured a futuristic megalopolis Hong Kong. Having Johansson (Lucy 2014) and Kitano (Outrage 2010/2012) as leading actors was satisfying in their familiar cool killer roles.

This film adaption of the original manga GITS is watchable but pales by comparison with the anime version. Everyone in the film speaks English exception the Section 9 chief, who speaks Japanese. Puzzling. Worth a watch if you are a sci-fi fan.

Go find the original ANIME version (the movie) or the MANGA - both far superior to this. A visually nice film, but utterly superfluous.

Should have been better,
The rule is WE CANNOT Make live action adapations because the universes are so unique and unable to become live action, also suffers american influence in changing names and locations, although Scarlett Johannson did a good job as playing Makoto and how she looks but that is about it, if you want the real GITS experience check out Ghost in the Shell 1997 and Stand Alone Complex as well as Arise. That is all

I'm loathe to compare GHOST IN THE SHELL to BLADE RUNNER, but the cinematography is that good; what a shame that the comparison has to end with the candy wrapper. Open up GHOST and it's a mess. I’m angry that such lush aesthetics were squandered on this anemic script. Scarlett Johansson turns in her most wooden performance as Major, a human brain in a synthetic body. Perhaps she decided to play the character as an emotionless robot. If she did, she should have rethought her approach. Other characters are similarly misused. It’s impossible to care about any of them. I’m a huge fan of the animated series, and this turkey bears little resemblance to its progenitor. I really don’t mind the story being changed, but if you’re going to change it, it had better be as good as the original.

Ghost in a Shell is like Tokyo on steroids--stimulus overload but lacking a soul. Scarlett Johannson's flat acting performance fails to impress in a body suit that makes her look near naked. Denmark's Pilou Asbaek, France's Juliette Binoche and Australia's Daniel Henshall offer some much-needed depth to an otherwise lack lustre story line that butchered the manga roots from which it was derived. Lovers of all things digital will relish a feast for the eyes but it is a flick that falls short of wider audience appeal.

Find many memorable quotes in IMDb already, these two in particular:

You are more than just a weapon. You have a soul... a ghost. When we see our uniqueness as a virtue, only then will we find peace.
We cling to memories as if they define us, but... they really don't. What we do is what defines us.
For visual quotes on the striking locations in Hong Kong and New Zealand, there are many in the net. Here are two I like:
