A graphic novel memoir with LGBT-themed tales of love and loss In this autobiographical work, Patrick Atangan documents the sad hilarity of his love life, from awkward first encounters, to finding out that the great guy you've been dating already has a boyfriend, to the sad inevitability of a break up. In this whimsical collection, creator Patrick Atangan describes his everyday struggles with social interaction, and the many attempts he has made at finding the right man. While the awkwardness in his stories makes for some amusing fodder, there is plenty of wisdom to also be found. Because the creator is reflecting back on his past, feelings of bitterness, and embarrassment aren't as prevalent as they could have been; so even though we can recognize what he went through, it doesn't affect the tone. The feel of the graphic novel borders between amusement and melancholy. The character comes off as an introvert who longs for love, but both the narration and design contribute to us seeing him as quite lackadaisical as well. Every strip is no more than ten pages. They are done digitally, with geometric shapes for backgrounds, and curvy character designs. The artist makes bold colour choices in all aspects. For the most part these are great, it gives the book a unique look, however in panels with darker backgrounds, the black text becomes harder to read. Atangan is a very thoughtful and well-spoken writer, with years of trial and failure to reflect upon, so even though this is a fairly small collection, it is packed with a lot.
