An interesting take on divorce by horror/ sci-fi master David Cronenberg. To judge this film by today's standards is a fool's errand- this was a low budget horror film made in the 70's- you've got to take context into account when watching older films. That being, said I found this to be a very disturbing film in atmosphere and tone.

I saw this as a kid in the '70's on late night T.V. as I guess it qualified as Canadian content; and it seriously messed up my innocent mind. I had no idea what it was called and had to tell myself years later that it had indeed existed and that I wasn't a sick fug for imagining such a work. Re-watching it in 2015, there are some seriously ha ha moments that were (perhaps?) meant to scare, but the makeup effects are still repulsively excellent. The "psychoplasmosis" concept is so 1970's and overall there is the pervasive aroma of cheese that will just never shampoo out of your shag carpet, but that is what defines these types of works. Definitely worth checking out if you are into low-budget horror from the era, just don't expect "Pan's Labyrinth" quality from an era when the genre got "no respect".

This wasn't very good, even considering its age. The premise is pretty silly, and it plays out just as silly on screen. It would have been better had there been a supernatural manifestation of the lead character's anger rather than the cheesy physical manifestation the writer chose. In retrospect, there are lots of better horror films made in the 70s and early 80s (Halloween, The Omen, The Exorcist, Salem's Lot, The Legend of Hell House, Poltergeist, The Shining, A Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.) that I would've liked to have watched again instead of wasting my time with this one.

The Brood is undoubtedly a very fascinating film. Sure, it is not David Cronenberg's best movie, but that does not mean it is not worth a viewing. A lot of it is very cheesy, but come on. Wasn't that the point? If you going to watch it, know what it is and take it for what it is. Plus, people who love horror movies from the 1970s and 80s (as I do) will probably greatly enjoy The Brood.
