The king of the pill mills was American Pain, a mega-clinic that served as a prototype for the rest. From a pristine former bank building, doctors distributed massive quantities of oxycodone to hundreds of customers a day, mostly traffickers and addicts who came by the vanload. Inked muscle-heads ran security, greeting the morning rush of pill poppers with cries of Welcome to the dope hole! Strippers and high-priced hookers operated the pharmacy, counting out pills and stashing cash in garbage bags.

"America's Deadliest Drug Epidemic"? Guess again. 33,000 deaths a years from heroin, fentanyl etc. 480,000 deaths a year from commercial hot burning overdose monoxide combustion nicotine $igarettes!!! 2014 Surgeon General estimate $289-Bil./year cost to US economy from "tobacco"-related illnesses-- Big pHARMa cashing in on the remains of Big Tobacco. (Well, of course, the killing is slower-- "only" 10-15 years shorter lifespan per addict, o.k.)

Most of this takes place in Florida. I had no idea they (at one time) had streets lined with pain clinics.

It was interesting to hear about the customers of these pain clinics such as where they came from and how far they drove for these prescription medications. Sad too.

The book did a good job of explaining opening a pain clinic by non doctors to the day-to-day operations and how they marketed themselves and of course eventually were shut down.
