It is the autumn of 1367. Master Hugh is enjoying the peaceful life of Bampton when a badly beaten man is found under the porch of St. Andrew's Chapel. The dying man is a chapman---a traveling merchant. Before he is buried in the chapel grounds, an ancient, corroded coin is found in the man's mouth.

Roman ruins and coins, villeins escaping brutal lords, and Hugh's usual lesson on medicine in the middle ages. Incidentally, Bampton, where all this takes place, is one of the backdrops for Downton Abbey. Hugh manages to rescue two women in distress (one of whom is such a shrew, he might have preferred to leave her to her fate) and sort out their problems, as well as finding who committed the murder. An enjoyable read.
