Composed almost entirely of brilliantly shot, single-take vignettes focusing on characters connected to one seemingly minor incident on a Paris street, Haneke's film, with an outstanding international cast is a revelatory take on racial inequality and the failure of communication in today's increasingly diverse European landscape.

Not Michael Haneke's best, but all of his movies are a cut above and worth a watch.

A year 2000 warning to French society! Ignore the poor integration of the immigrant population from Africa, the Middle-East, and Eastern Europe and you might pay a big price. This is a film composed of short scenes of Parisians poorly interacting with immigrants from Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe (Romania). Buildings now have electronic entry codes. If you don’t know the entry codes, you can’t communicate with the people inside, which is similar to Parisians not communicating with immigrants. And lack of communication exists between family members and between friends that have opposite occupations (like a war correspondent or a war soldier or a war refuge not able or willing to communicate the horrors to people unaware).

Ok, I confess my review is a bit skewed because I was absolutely bored and couldn't get more than 1/2 way through it. And I always watch movies to end - but I just couldn't for this one. On Rotten Tomatoes this is described as an "art house" film. Exactly.

This is SUCH a good film. It really reflects the way we live now.

On the streets of contemporary Paris a casually cruel gesture has an immediate affect on a disparate group of people and sends emotional ripples across half a continent. This engaging film uses several cinematic styles to chronicle the stories of these people while underscoring its central theme.....the misery that results from our inability to truly communicate with one another. This lack of empathy is demonstrated in various subtle ways; from the many instances of misunderstandings to the jarring use of quick cuts, often in the middle of a sentence, leaving the viewer to guess as to what was actually happening. As usual Haneke’s style is maddeningly cryptic and he delivers his sermon with the customary amount of smugness. But if you’ve seen enough of his films you already know what to expect.

The director, Haneke, chooses very very tough themes, he's not interested in commerciality or in reassuring his audiences. He's confrontational.
In Code Unknown he explores urbanization under duress or strain, especially the stains felt by those unfamiliar with one another's cultures, those with tenuous or devolving links to one another, and the disintegration of social unity. Don't expect easy coherance so much as insight into the world we are vested in.
With respect, we watch films with differing intents and this is okay, but this is definitely not a popcorn/pizza movie---much more involved.

There are probably other more entertaining videos for you to borrow at any given time, but if you don't mind reading sub-titles, this movie is more character study than plot. The ending is somewhat up-in-the-air, as well. If you can't sleep, this may help.
