A good second volume in the series. Takes some very dramatic turns, with Marseilles in the West under siege by an army of robots while Jax is on the run again. Very exciting despite occasional flaws. I look forward to the conclusion!

Having broken the alchemical bonds that shackled him to his human masters, clockwork automaton Jax must adjust to life as an emancipated Clakker who possesses free will. His first decision is to travel to the North in search of Neverland, a colony established by others like himself. Meanwhile, war between the French and the Dutch threatens to spill over into their respective North American colonies. The Rising is the 2nd book in the Alchemy Wars series; due to the narrative's multiple perspectives, intricate plotting, and complex geopolitics, newcomers should start at the beginning with The Mechanical.
