Under her care, the chicks grow into hens and even give Sonya a wonderful gift: an egg! One night, Sonya hears noises coming from the chicken coop and discovers that one of her hens has disappeared. Where did the hen go? What happened to her? When Sonya discovers the answers, she learns some important truths about the interconnectedness of nature and the true joys and sorrows of caring for another creature.

From Library Staff

A charming and compelling story of a young girl carefully nurturing a trio of little chicks. We watch Sonya as she engages in the day-to-day tasks of raising chickens, sees her chicks grow into hens, and comes to terms with losing one to a hungry fox family. - Jan B.

Finally, a children's story about empathy for animals that discusses animals as they actually behave, not how we pretend they do (e.g. cute, for our entertainment).

Her dad has the difficult task of explaining to Phoebe why a fox would attack one of her chickens. Rich, colorful illustrations create a safe and comforting world from which to look at the circle of life. I particularly liked that the story ends on a happy and more hopeful note. Good choice for a child who is beginning to have questions about death.
