This movie is amazing. For a number of reasons. It's not often a movie is made entirely in Maori. (Don't worry - subtitles.) I'd call this an action/drama. The action is brutal - consider yourself warned - and very well done. It's set in New Zealand, pre-European invasion, so the weapons are hand weapons. Mere and taiaha in particular. The acting is really strong. The writing is good. The directing, cinematography, etc is all top class. It's a gritty tale. Kinda dark. It touches on Maori belief systems, spirituality, customs, but not in a hokey, silly way. The whole thing is coherent, flows well, and is worth the watch. Tu meke.

I expected not to like this but was actually surprised by the quality of the story. Yes, it was violent but not so much so that it felt gratuitous. And the fact that all the dialog was in Maori was an added bonus.

An action adventure set in pre-European New Zealand.
Explores themes of honour, revenge, and family loyalty.
Outstanding fight choreography. Pretty violent, but if that doesn't bother you, a pretty enjoyable film.
Completely in te reo Māori so unless you're fluent, be prepared for subtitles.

A good video. Nice to see where the All Blacks get their song and dance routine.
