Of all the charming misfits on television, there's no doubt Raj from The Big Bang Theory--the sincere yet incurably geeky Indian-American astrophysicist--ranks among the misfittingest. Now, we meet the actor who is every bit as loveable as the character he plays on TV. In this revealing collection of essays written in his irreverent, hilarious, and self-deprecating voice, Kunal Nayyar traces his journey from a little boy in New Delhi who mistakes an awkward first kiss for a sacred commitment to the grown man who meets and marries a former Miss India in an elaborate seven-day event chronicaled in "My Big Fat Indian Wedding." In between, he grapples with feelings of loneliness and being an outsider, tells his parents he wants to be an actor, and offers a bold new theory to explain to a skeptical world "Why being an Indian is cool."--Adapted from book jacket.

I always thought the Indian accent of Raj in the Big Band Theory is fake until I read this book. In sharing his upbringing in New Delhi; his love for India; his loneliness in college at Portland; his desire to be accepted into American culture; his acting education in Temple University; his failures and triumphs in audition and acting career; his big wedding, you get to know him more. He is so honest, so funny, so likeable. You just can’t help liking him more after reading this book. Very enjoyable book to read!

Short, but enjoyable biography.
Father trying to shoot a mouse with a gun & lying to mother on damage so funny ,yet so American.
Week long wedding ceremony illuminating.

After seeing this come through the library I thought I'd give it a try. Wow. Awesome biography. Kunal is funny and has really been through a lot. He may not be a science genius in real life, but his humour is similar to Raj's on the show. Easy to read, recommended.

This book was great! It was a fun quick read, really funny and enjoyable! I liked that he focused on his life as a whole (growing up in India, his university experience, becoming an actor, his marriage); rather than his current fame in The Big Bang Theory. If you are looking for an insider peek into the show this is not the book for you. If you want to learn more about the actor and his experiences in a funny lighthearted way then this book would be a good one.

Surprisingly, I loved this book! I honestly thought this might have been a book where the actor turned writer takes full advantage of their possible fleeting fame and so I assumed he would talk a lot about Big Bang Theory and his costars. This was not the case, and I appreciated it. The book is hilarious (although, there are some body function references that I could also do without). I also really enjoyed learning about his culture and experiences growing up and immigrating to the US. I'd recommend for sure!

A quick read, entertaining and light. Nayyar is a little too willing to share details about his bodily functions, but otherwise I enjoyed the stories.

If you're a fan of The Big Bang Theory looking for behind-the-scenes stories about the series and cast, they're not here. There's very little mentioned regarding the series, except for Nayyar's audition, a paragraph about ping pong on set, and a couple of stories about guest stars.
